Youth charged in long weekend shooting in Hamilton

A youth faces charges in a shooting on the Labour Day long weekend in Hamilton.

The shooting allegedly happened after a dispute in the Upper Wentworth Street in the Kingfisher Drive area on Sunday, Sept. 1, Hamilton Police said.

One person drew and fired a handgun at several people but no one was hit or injured.

The shooter was last seen fleeing on foot, wearing a black tracksuit with a white circular pattern and a black ski mask, along Upper Wentworth Street in the Kingfisher Drive area.

Police released a video of the shooting.

On Wednesday, police said officers found a suspect downtown. The person was arrested without incident.

As a youth, the person cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The youth was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited loaded firearm, discharge firearm with intent, assault with a weapon, possession of a firearm contrary to order, and breach of youth probation order.

Hamilton Police thanked the public for their assistance in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

Although an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing. The Shooting Response Team is currently holding a residence in Hamilton as part of the continuing investigation and in anticipation of executing a search warrant.
