A young driver faces charges after he was caught speeding down the Linc through the fog at nearly 160 km/h.
Hamilton Police announced the arrest on Dec. 28. They said the driver, 19, was speeding through the 90 zone on Lincoln Alexander Pkwy. on Dec. 27. Police continued the driver was clocked at 157 km/h. Officers pulled the driver over.
He was charged with stunt driving and speeding. His car has been impounded for two weeks and his license has been suspended for 30 days.
“Extreme” fog blanketed the city last night, as described by Environment Canada. The ministry had already predicted and warned of “near zero visibility.” Knowing of this alert Hamilton Police put out a statement warning residents to reduce speed, use low-beam headlights, plan ahead and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. They reiterated this advice in announcing the driver’s arrest.
The fog is expected to persist along the southwest lakeshore, including Niagara, Hamilton and some of Halton, until Friday morning. While Environment Canada said the fog may lighten up in the afternoon, it’s expected to get worse tonight.
“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” they wrote.
Police echoed these concerns saying “Let’s prioritize safety and look out for each other. Your safety matters, and we’re here for you. Let’s make safe choices on the roads during these challenging conditions.”
