A woman reported an early morning sexual assault in a Hamilton park.

The woman was walking through Birge Park (at Wentworth Street North and Birge Street) in Hamilton on Sunday (Jun 11) shortly after 3 a.m., Hamilton Police said in a press release.

At that point, a man the woman didn’t know approached from behind and attacked her, police said.

The man is described as Hispanic, around 30 to 40 years old with a slim build. He was wearing a black windbreaker and a fishing hat with the letter “Z” in yellow.

He was last seen leaving the area walking westbound on Birge Street towards Emerald Street North, police said.

Police ask residents in the area to check their video surveillance between the hours of 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. for any suspicious behaviour.

The Hamilton Police Service says it recognizes the impact these events continue to have on the community.

“Public Safety remains our priority and officers continue to work diligently to investigate these incidents, and prevent further acts of violence,” police said.

Anyone with information on this incident should contact the Division One Staff Sergeant at 905-546-4725 or the Detective Sergeant for Division One Criminal Investigations at 905-546-3833.
