With fall in the air, Hamilton will host leaf and yard composting education sessions

Fall is in the air, so many Hamilton residents will be busy cleaning up their yards until the first significant snowfall.
Leaf and yard composting can bring about some confusion, so the city is looking to educate residents on putting waste in the right place.
To commemorate Circular Economy Month and Waste Reduction Week, the City of Hamilton’s Waste Management team is hosting two virtual education sessions — on Oct. 19 and 20 from noon to 1 p.m.
Residents can use their mobile devices to see what goes where by downloading the city’s waste and recycling app at hamilton.ca/wasteapp.
The city will be sharing tips throughout October to encourage residents to make daily environmentally conscious changes.
Circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible.
Rather than just finding recycling solutions, recovery and material reuse is part of the design and manufacturing process of the product from the beginning.
Waste Reduction Week runs from Oct. 17 to 23.
Residents can drop off hazardous waste and appliances, such as bulky rigid plastics, electronics, household hazardous waste, scrap metal, and tires, for free at one of the city’s three community recycling centres.
The city also recommends donating old clothes rather than discarding them in the trash.
The last collection day of curbside yard waste is Dec. 9, 2022.
Regular weekly collection of curbside yard waste will resume on March 6, 2023.
