Weather flips from soggy to steamy in Hamilton and Niagara area

This morning, it was a storm warning and by late this afternoon (July 3), it has flipped to a heat warning in the Hamilton and Niagara Region.

According to Environment Canada, both Hamilton, and Niagara are being warned a “heat event” will begin on Tuesday (July 4). “A two or three-day hot and humid event for most areas is expected to begin on Tuesday.”

While some rain is still expected, the entire Golden Horseshoe can expect temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s but the Humidex is going to push that into the high 30s and low 40s.

Areas in Hamilton and Niagara near either Lake Ontario or Lake Erie “could be slightly cooler than regions further inland.”

“Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category.” Since Canada Day on July 1, the air quality has consistently been in the low-risk bracket.

Environment Canada added, “Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.”
