Update: Shooting at Hamilton park results in arrest, victim expected to survive

A 41-year-old man was arrested following a shooting at Montgomery Park in Hamilton last night (Sept. 11) that sent another man with multiple gunshot wounds to hospital.

The 35-year-old victim is in “stable condition and is expected to survive his injuries,” according to Hamilton police.

Police are looking for a female witness who they described as a woman with light black skin, around 30 to 40 years old, who wore black shorts and a white shirt. Detectives encourage the woman to contact the homicide office.

The man who was arrested faces charges including attempted murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing a loaded prohibited firearm and possessing a prohibited device.

At 8:40 p.m. on Sept. 11, police said officers were in the area of Weir Street South and Main Street East on an unrelated matter when they heard gunshots and a male screaming from the park at 1570 Main Street E.

The officers discovered a man and a woman fleeing from the pavilion. Police were able to capture and arrest the man near a private residence on Weir Street South but the woman escaped during a brief foot chase. A handgun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered.

Police found the 35-year-old victim who had multiple gunshot wounds under a pavilion in the park’s north end. The victim was quickly brought to hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.
