Two men are on the lam today after a violent carjacking, Hamilton Police said.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 20, two men approached a car by West 5th St. and Brantdale Ave up on the Mountain. The pair pulled a gun on the occupants and tried to “forcefully” pull them from the car. When this failed, they assaulted the people in the car and then fled in a waiting white sedan.

They did not manage to steal the car. Investigators did not share the extent of the victims’ injuries

Police describe the first suspect as a 35-year-old white man, standing five-foot-eight with a large build, facial hair, and comb-over hairstyle. He wore a shiny black puffer jacket, a grey shirt and dark pants. The second suspect is another white man, though taller and slimmer than his partner. He had dark hair and wore a sleeveless puffer jacket with some red on it and a white long-sleeve shirt underneath.

Investigators noted this attack is part of a rising trend of carjackings. This year has seen a record level of this crime unseen in a decade. In Hamilton alone, there have been 17 carjackings like this, well above the 10-year average of 10.

Ford, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Honda, and Toyota are the most targeted brands which reflects the top five brands sold in Canada. Hamilton Police say they’ve undertaken several proactive measures to prevent these attacks. They’ve also joined an Ontario-wide task force with the likes of Toronto, Peel and Durham police among others to

However, they still advise residents to remain vigilant, keep their cars locked up, stay in well-lit areas, hide valuables, and stay connected to loved ones.
