A road that drivers in Ancaster rely on will be out of commission for almost all of next year, due to a reconstruction project.

Southcote Rd. is slated to get pedestrian crossings, a multi-use path and a controlled intersection installed in 2023, which could improve walkability in one of the most car-centric areas of Hamilton. The work, which will require closing the road, is due to begin on Jan. 9 and continue until November. The reconstruction work will take place from south of the Hwy. 403 bridge to Secinaro Ave.,. just north of Garner Rd.

Details of the reconstruction work were shared by Ward 12 Coun. Craig Cassar in Craig’s Current, his e-newsletter to constituents. The councillor noted the “project will have a major impact on Ancaster traffic flow.”

A schematic showed how the road will be widened, allowing more reaction time for drivers and creating more physical separation between drivers and people who are walking or cycling.

The upgrades along what was been a two-way country road through an urbanizing area include:

  • A turning lane situated between the two travel lanes;
  • A sidewalk on the west side, and a multi-use path on the east side. Both will be separated from the road by landscape boulevards;
  • A new traffic light-pedestrian crossing at the Stonehenge Rd. intersection, as well as new pedestrian crossings at the Cabriolet Cres. trail, Gray Court Dr., and the Secinaro Ave. / Burbridge Way intersection.
  • The section Secinaro Ave. and Garner Rd. will only be resurfaced. But a raised concrete path for pedestrians will be added there.
