One day and six years after the first Royal Rumble graced the ring at Copps Coliseum, the Hamilton arena hosted another big card, this one headlined by a WWF Intercontinental Title match between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mr. Perfect.
The card also featured the Undertaker (he defeated Tugboat), Jake the Snake Roberts (winner over Rick Martel) and Big Boss Man, who took out the Barbarian in a match that lasted more than 11 minutes.
Other fights on January 25, 1991 lineup included Haiku beating Shane Douglas, the Nasty Boys (Jerry Sags and Brian Knobb) over the Bushwhackers (Butch and Luke), Sam Houston defeating Brooklin Brawler and a 3-on-2 Handicap match, which saw Hawk and Animal defeating Kato, Tanaka and Mr. Fuji.
The 5,000 fans in attendance for the Friday night event saw Canadian wrestling legend Piper – namesake for MMA icon Rowdy Rhonda Rousey – take the belt from Mr. Perfect on a count-out.
Piper died in 2015 of a cardiac arrest after a bout with Hodgkins’s lymphoma.
