Record Store Day is Saturday (April 23) in Hamilton and there are quite a few independently owned music stores in the city participating this year.
The one-day event – billed as the largest single-day music event in the world – started in the U.S. in 2007 and has grown to include thousands of stores around the globe, with special releases, in-store gigs and even street parties the order of the day.
In some U.S. states, Record Store Day has been declared an official holiday that celebrates ‘the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities,’ it says on the event’s website.
This year’s ambassador for Record Store Day is Taylor Swift and special releases and exclusives include ‘We Die Young’ from Alice in Chains, Bad Company’s ‘Live’ 1979 (in opaque orange), and two unreleased EPs from the late, great David Bowie and The Lakes, from Swift.
In Hamilton, there are five local stores listed as participants. They are:
- Revolution Records at 166 Ottawa St. N
- Hammer City Records at 228 James St. N
- Dr. Disc at 20 Wilson St.
- Into the Abyss at 119 Locke St. S Unit A
- Records on Wheels at 34 King St E (Dundas)
