Police seized 442 guns, got 457,400 911 calls in Hamilton this year

Hamilton Police seized 442 guns and received more than 457,400 911 calls throughout 2023.

The police service released a few year-end stats on Dec. 28. They said they seized 442 guns during the year and responded to 33 reported shootings. Of these 22 involved a victim who was shot. In investigating these shootings police laid 172 charges.

“Together, we can put an end to gun violence and illegal gun possession. It’s a shared responsibility to take guns off our streets,” police said.

However, these calls represent only a fraction of the service’s work this year. Describing it as the “heartbeat of the service” police said their 911 communications branch received 457,442 as of this morning. That breaks down to 1,253 calls every day.

Of that, 231,573 calls, more than half, were deemed an emergency and 361,339 (nearly 80 per cent) required a police response. However almost four per cent of all calls (
