Person barricades themselves in Hamilton home, SIU investigating

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into an incident in which a person barricaded themselves inside a home in Hamilton following reports to police of an assault Friday morning.

Hamilton Police say officers were called to a house on Princess Street shortly after 7:30 a.m. after receiving reports of an assault.

When officers arrived, a person reportedly refused to leave the home and barricaded themselves inside.

The SIU, a civilian agency that investigates incidents in which members of the public are seriously hurt or killed during interactions with police, has since invoked its mandate and taken over the case.

Princess Street remains open, though police say there will be a heightened presence in the area throughout the weekend.

Officers say they will not provide further details and have directed all inquiries to the SIU.
