2 dead hamilton ontario crash

An officer stopping for a post-shift bite ended up arresting an impaired driver passed out in a Hamilton drive-thru, police say.

The Hamilton Police Service says an officer was in a drive-thru line-up around 2:30 a.m. on Monday to pick up food after an evening on duty.

That’s when the officer noticed the car ahead of him wasn’t moving. And getting out to investigate revealed a driver “passed out behind the wheel, unresponsive and showing no signs of waking up,” police say.

“After several attempts to rouse the individual — and a strong scent of alcohol in the air — the officer determined the driver was impaired,” police said.

The driver did eventually wake up and “displayed clear signs of intoxication,” according to police.

The individual was arrested and breath testing resulted in readings “of 101 and 96 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood,” police say.

The driver was later released by way of undertaking. The driver’s name ahs not been released.

The incident has police reminding the public that drivers can face impaired operation charges “whether you’re cruising down the highway or coasting toward a combo meal.”

“Plan ahead, arrange a safe ride, and keep our roads safe,” police said.

Anyone who witnesses a suspected unsafe or impaired driver can report it to police by calling 911 when it is safe to do so.
