Nominations to honour Hamiltonians who have made “exceptional voluntary contributions” to the community are now open.
The Order of Hamilton was established in 2019 as the city’s highest municipal order. Since then only 39 people have been inducted for their work in the city. The work must be of a volunteer nature “above and beyond their professional contributions.”
Inductees include residents from all walks of life including coaches and sports figures, educators, naturalists, Rotary Club members, advocates, church and mosque members, tour guides, scholars and a great many more.
Nominations can be made online, at Hamilton City Hall, any Municipal Service Centre and any branch of the Hamilton Public Library. Nominations must include a letter of reference from a third party with the signed agreement of the nominee.
Order members are inducted by a committee of the City Manager, the Clerk, and chaired by Mayor Andrea Horwath. No more than ten nominees are inducted in any given year. Inductees are awarded a lapel pin and a medal presented at the Mayor’s New Year’s Levy in January.
“Hamilton is home to many passionate volunteers whose contributions can be seen across our great city. The Order of Hamilton recognizes and celebrates Hamiltonians who have made exceptional contributions through their volunteer efforts in building community and improving the lives of our residents,” said Horwath.
The nomination form is available online. Submission must be made by Dec. 15.
