Almost $64 million in new funding going to affordable housing in Hamilton

Nearly $64 million in funding from Ottawa and the City of Hamilton will go towards building and repairing more than 214 new units of affordable housing in Steeltown.

“This funding will ease pressure on our shelter system and change the lives of Hamilton residents, through support for four Hamilton housing initiatives designed to address the needs of seniors, Indigenous Peoples, women and children fleeing domestic violence, and people experiencing mental health,” said Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath in a statement Monday (July 31). She joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today in Hamilton as he announced the investment.

Horwath said the federal government’s $45 million funding and a $19.14-million investment from the City of Hamilton “will help accelerate the construction and repair of affordable housing so people of all ages and income levels can continue to call Hamilton home.”

The joint funding will help housing projects at 90 Carling Street, 104-106 Bay Street, 219 East Avenue North and 32 Clapham Road.  

“All across the country, I hear from Canadians that the cost of housing is a top concern – and that’s why we are rapidly investing to build more homes,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Today’s investment to build and repair hundreds of homes in Hamilton will make housing more affordable, create good jobs for the middle class, and grow the economy.”

According to the press release, the federal government has made investments in 7,255 homes in Hamilton since 2015.
