St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) will be opening a new COVID-19 testing centre at Mohawk College later this month to replace the Drive-Thru testing centre closing this weekend.
The new centre will be capable of handling 400 to 500 testing appointments a day, SJHH said in a press release issued Wednesday (Oct. 7), depending on demand.
“The new centre will be staffed by St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton,” the release said.
“The centre will be housed in a large, self-contained building separate from the main college campus and will operate on a daytime schedule to include weekends.”
The final day for the drive-thru testing at the Mountain Arena will be this coming Sunday (Oct. 11), and the new testing centre at Mohawk will open on Oct. 23.
Results from tests done at the Arena will still be available at that location after its closure, weekdays between noon and 3 p.m. until Oct. 23.
In the interim, SJHH’s West 5th COVID-19 testing location will increase their hours to support testing demand during the transition.
“The 10-day gap between the closure of the Drive-Thru Centre and the opening of the new Mountain Testing Centre will be temporarily accommodated at St. Joseph’s Mountain COVID-19 Testing Centre (West 5th Campus),” the release said.
“This site will extend its hours beginning Tuesday, October 13, from 4:30 to 10 p.m.”
The extended hours at this site are expected to accommodate upwards of 400 appointments a day, but when the new testing site opens at Mohawk, the West 5th site will cease operations.
The East and West end assessment sites in Hamilton will continue to operate as usual, the release says.
Access to testing is by appointment only across the province at this time. To make an appointment at one of Hamilton’s testing centres, visit the City’s website.

To date, Hamilton’s assessment centres have completed 84,798 COVID-19 tests.
