Mohawk College in Hamilton received $2.6 million to pursue new research projects, including one that uses remotely piloted vehicles.

The funding, announced Tuesday (Apr. 5), was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The college’s applied research department, Ideaworks, received the grants to support economic recovery and help 24 Canadian companies access Mohawk’s services in a range of technology areas.

“This funding will allow Mohawk students to gain valuable applied research experience, working with Mohawk researchers to find and implement innovative technical solutions that can give companies a competitive advantage,” said Ron J. McKerlie, President & CEO, Mohawk College. “As one of Canada’s top-ranked research colleges, we look forward to contributing to a strong, resilient recovery in the Hamilton region.”

The supported projects include unmanned remote sensing systems, cross-platform connectivity, sensor integration, technology automation, and cyber security.

As part of the funding, Mohawk says as many as 64 students will be hired as research team members to support the projects.

“Today’s funding announcement recognizes the significant expertise available at Mohawk College’s innovation centres and research labs and the valuable role that applied research and college expertise plays in helping Canadian companies grow and thrive,” said Cristina Gage, Interim Dean of Applied Research.

The Canadian Unmanned & Remote Sensing Innovation Network project at Mohawk is received $2 million of the total funds. Remote sensing using remotely piloted aerial systems, rovers, and unmanned boats is emerging as a rapid and cost-effective tool for exploring and inspecting critical infrastructure systems.

This funding is part of an announced federal investment of $46.9 million for 74 new applied research projects through the College and Community Innovation (CCI) program.
