The Canada Foundation for Innovation has awarded Mohawk College $1 million to finance an expansion to their Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre to allow more 3D printing technology and projects.

According to Mohawk, this will allow the centre to “expand its applied research work with multisectoral industries on applied research and technology development through next-generation additive manufacturing,” otherwise known as 3D printing.

“We are grateful for the support Mohawk College has received from Canada Foundation for Innovation,” said Mohawk College President Paul Armstrong. “This strategic investment will solidify AMIC’s position as a national leader in additive manufacturing research and development while creating innovative new opportunities for students and supporting local and sustainable manufacturing initiatives.”

The college described the new technology “as the evolution of [3D printing] technologies, featuring faster print speeds, increased efficiency, lower unit costs, superior component quality, and enhanced process repeatability.”

“We are thrilled to receive this funding, which will allow [Mohawk] to remain at the forefront of additive manufacturing in Canada,” said Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre General Manager Simon Coulson

“These new [additive manufacturing] technologies will drive the adoption of additive manufacturing by more companies by supporting innovative designs, prototypes, and mass production validation,” Coulson continued, “This equipment is more competitive with traditional manufacturing processes while maintaining the flexibility and design freedoms inherent with legacy [additive manufacturing] technology.”

The Mohawk Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre has worked on more than 230 projects in its ten-year existence. It has received funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation once before.
