A Hamilton man faces manslaughter charges after his mother died.
The charges come after officers responded to an attack of several members of the same family in a home on Hamilton Mountain on May 31, Hamilton Police said.
At that time, police learned that Milka Spanovic, 86, another member of the family, was attacked a few days earlier on May 25, police said.
Police said she was still in hospital being treated for her injuries at that time.
Gojko Spanovic, 59, of Hamilton was arrested on May 31 and charged with several criminal offences including aggravated assault. At the time of his arrest, Gojko Spanovic was on two separate release orders.
Milka Spanovic remained in hospital until she died on June 6, police said.
The Homicide Unit then took over the investigation.
On Oct. 9, police upgraded the aggravated assault charge against Gojko Spanovic to manslaughter.
Gojko Spanovic faces charges in three incidents in 2024. The charges include manslaughter, assault with a weapon, assault (choking), four counts of assault, forcible confinement, threaten death, fail to comply with conditions of an undertaking, fail to comply with conditions of a release order, and mischief damaging property under $5,000.
