Lighthouse Fish Market in downtown Hamilton closing in April

After nearly 40 years as a staple of central Hamilton the Lighthouse Fish Market is closing its doors this April.

Opened as a fresh seafood market specializing in traditional Portuguese products in 1985, the store evolved into a local grocery store (and garden centre in season) and quickly became a neighbourhood favourite.

Residents and other regular customers called the news “a huge loss” for James Street and Hamilton but not a surprise, as the business was put up for sale prior to the pandemic.

Established as a family business by Frank and Elcina Miranda, the business became all-consuming for Elcina and her family after Frank’s death in 2016 and with the sale of the building completed this year, Elcina Miranda told inthehammer it’s time to walk away.

“After 40 years it’s time to retire,” she said philosophically. “There has been no time to do anything else. Now I have the time to enjoy my life.”

The Lighthouse has brought life, a European vibe and old-fashioned charm to downtown Hamilton and the family has also been very active in the community.

Nearly four decades after opening, the Lighthouse Fish Market, located at 219 James St. N. Hamilton, just south of Barton Street, will dim the lights for the last time this spring.

Another Lighthouse, the popular Lighthouse Fish & Chips in Ainslie, known for its fresh fish, ‘proper’ fries and British-style gravy, is already closed.

The west end restaurant on Main Street is marked ‘permanently closed’ on its website and the phone number is no longer in service.
