Inquest date set to look into death of Hamilton prisoner who died 5 years ago

An official inquest date has been set to look into the death of a 55-year-old Hamilton prisoner who died at a hospital on May 5, 2018.

Dr. Karen Schiff, Regional Supervising Coroner for the West Region, said that the inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 14.

In September, officers said that Dale Barron died at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre. However, it has now been revealed by the police that he died at the hospital, following his transfer from prison.

The inquest is slated to span four days, during which three witnesses will examine the circumstances surrounding Barron’s demise and will play a critical role in shedding light on the events leading to his death.

Presiding over the inquest will be Dr. Richard McLean, while presiding officer Alannah Grady will serve as the inquest counsel, responsible for guiding the process and representing the public interest.

This will be conducted via video conference, a measure designed to ensure both accessibility and safety, given the evolving landscape of public events and gatherings.
