Huge light and sound attraction coming to Hamilton

If you want to experience a unique light and sound attraction that will also be the site of a host of upcoming performances, you can do so in Hamilton.

Starting Nov. 1, a corridor of lights synchronized to the speed of sound called the Sonic Runway will open on Hamilton’s waterfront. According to the city, Sonic Runway is a light-art installation that translates audio signals into patterns of light that shoot down a 432 ft. (132 metres) corridor of 25 LED-lined arches at the speed of sound.

The runway, which will operate until Nov. 26, will be on display at Pier 8 along the Waterfront Trail near the Discovery Centre (57 Discovery Dr.). 

“Sonic Runway creates an unforgettable experience as you walk through the arches. At the front of Sonic Runway, you see musical sound waves rippling away. Walking down the corridor, sound and light are always in sync,” the city said in a news release. 

“Looking back from the far end, you can see the sound waves coming towards you in light, and hear the music as the pattern reaches you.” 

Over the course of the installation’s run, attendees can check out temporary art installations by local artists and a series of live performances on select evenings. 

Some performances include Republic Dance Co. featuring Janessa Pudwell on Nov. 4, Salsa on the Sonic Runway with SalsaSoul Productions on Nov. 12, Diwali Lights in collaboration with Samaj Hindu Temple on Nov. 16, Hamilton Glowriders waterfront ride night on Nov. 24 and more. 

The light and sound components will be activated at 5 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. 

Sonic Runway was created by Rob Jensen, Warren Trezevant and is tour produced by Creos.

The city says that people who are sensitive to strobe lights should use caution and that visitors should consider walking, biking or taking transit to the attraction, as parking is limited. 

The attraction is free to visit. 

The performances may be cancelled or postponed in the event of severe weather.
