A man was arrested after a break-in at a home in downtown Hamilton and officers retrieved a prohibited firearm that witnesses alleged belonged to the suspect, police said.

Hamilton police were able to identify a suspect after they quickly responded to a call about a home invasion on Market Street today (July 26), said spokesperson Jackie Penman.

The officers chased the suspect on foot and arrested him.

“Witnesses at a nearby mosque saw the suspect ditch a weapon and police were able to retrieve it,” Penman told hamilton.insauga.com in an email.

She said it was a prohibited semi-automatic firearm with an extended magazine.

“This is an ongoing investigation and more details will be released when they are available,” she added.

Hamilton police tweeted the news of the home invasion shortly after 3:50 p.m. today (July 26). They are investigating the crime. They said there was a “significant police presence in the area, so traffic may be affected.”

Hamilton police did not say if anyone was injured or if anything was stolen or vandalized.
