Hamilton’s McMaster University has made the Shanghai Rankings‘ top 100 universities in the world for the 20th straight year.

McMaster ranked 98th out of 1,000 institutions in the world and fifth in Canada this year in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

“As in previous years, McMaster’s strong performance is driven by the outstanding accomplishments of its faculty, including Nobel Prize winners, Clarivate highly cited researchers and the wide array of publications and citations in the fields of science and social sciences,” the university wrote on its website.

For the top five, Harvard University was No. 1, followed by Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge and University of California, Berkeley.

Among Canadian universities placed higher than McMaster, University of Toronto was the highest ranking one at No. 22. University of British Columbia made it as No. 44 and McGill University at No. 73.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities each year ranks more than 2,500 universities based on six criteria: the number of Nobel Prize- and Fields Medal-winning alumni and faculty; the number of Clarivate highly cited researchers; the number of articles published in journals Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science; and the per capita performance of the university.

McMaster was No. 2 among Canadian universities in the area of Quality of Education. It is tied for second in the area of Awards. Both categories measure the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winning alumni from an institution. Moreover, McMaster was fourth in Canada in the area of Highly Cited Researchers.

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which has conducted the rankings since 2009, describes itself as a “fully independent organization on higher education intelligence.”

McMaster’s clinical medicine program was ranked among the top 50 programs in the world and second in Canada in last year’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The new subject-based rankings will be released on Oct. 27.
