Hamilton’s crime map paints a picture of where and when crime is being reported

The Hamilton Police Service (HPS) offers a community crime map portal on its website, allowing residents to take a deep dive into the crime analytics throughout the city.

The types of crime data available range anywhere from alcohol violation and disorderly conduct to human trafficking and homicide. The community crime map even tells us which day of the week certain crimes are more prevalent, and at what times.

Unsurprisingly, the crime map is reflective of a neighbourhood’s population density and socio-economical position.

Most common crimes in Hamilton

Over the past 12 months, vehicle theft and burglary are the most common criminal acts in the city. The reported incidents are predominantly south of the escarpment, so if you recently moved downtown and you’re wondering why your vehicle insurance went up, that is why.

The highest concentration of vehicle thefts and burglaries appears to occur between Queen and John and Main and Herkimer streets.

When are people committing the most crimes in Hamilton

The community crime map for Hamilton indicates that Wednesday has the highest rate of activity with an average of 80 crimes being reported — followed by Saturday and Monday.

Meanwhile, fewer crimes are reported on Sunday and Thursday.

The hours between 9 a.m. and noon have the least amount of criminal activity reported to Hamilton police, while the majority of crimes occur after 3 p.m.
