The Hamilton Tiger-Cats shored up their depth on Monday, re-signing quarterback Jalen Morton, defensive lineman Ronheen Bingham and receiver Emmanuel Butler.
None of the three have seen the field yet in a regular-season game with the Tiger-Cats. Morton, 24, signed with the club in September and spent most of the season on the practice roster. The six-foot-three, 237-pound Arlington, Texas native has had look-sees from the National Football League’s Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts. Morton started 23 games over five seasons at Prairie View A&M, which plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the second tier of U.S. college football.
The Tiger-Cats have re-signed Dane Evans to be their No. 1 quarterback for the next two seasons. Evans’ contract extension is believed to be a signal that veteran QB Jeremiah Masoli will sign with another Canadian Football League team.
Bingham, 26, also spent the 2021 season on the Tiger-Cats practice roster after originally signing with the club in May 2020. The six-foot-two, 242-pound native of Bennettsville, S.C., played at Arkansas State (2017-18) after after beginning his collegiate career at Hutchinson Community College (2015-16) in Kansas.
Butler, 25, attended the Tiger-Cats’ training camp last summer but was released before the start of the season. The six-foot-four, 220-pound Phoenix native native was a practice squad player over two seasons with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Like Morton, he also played at a FCS program, Northern Arizona University.
The Tiger-Cats reached their second Grey Cup in a row last season (sandwiched around a COVID-cancelled 2020 season). However, they suffered a heartbreaking home-field overtime defeat against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Tim Hortons Field on Dec. 12.
