Hamilton set to install 12 ‘mobile’ Pride signs along Ottawa St N

In a unanimous decision on Monday(Aug. 14), the General Issues Committee voted in favour to fund the installation of 12 new Pride (mobile) signs and flags along Ottawa St. N.

“Ottawa Street BIA intends to hang six on each side of the street between May to September for the next five years,” the motion stated.

Put forth by Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nan, the motion centers around maintaining the pride flags and signs as a strategic priority within the city’s plan for Healthy and Safe Communities.

It emphasizes the importance of creating a safe space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community beyond just Pride Month celebrations.

Designed by trans artist Riley Jamieson, these signs are said to symbolize the ‘unity and joy of the queer community,’ showcasing a collaborative effort among artists, businesses, and citizens.

The financial aspect of the motion includes allocating $1,500 each from Ward 3 Bell Tower funds non-property tax revenue account and Ward 4 capital discretionary account to support the installation of the Pride signs.

The exact date of installation remains unclear at this time.
