Hamilton receives over $300K in funding for green initiatives

A significant investment of $335,000 from the Green Municipal Fund (GMF) is set to drive environmental progress in the City of Hamilton.

This funding will support two feasibility studies, both aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions for a more sustainable future for Hamiltonians.

“This will help carve a pathway for Hamilton to achieve Canada’s net-zero emission goals by harvesting thermal energy,” said Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency.

Hamilton Community Enterprises (HCE) will receive $175,000 to spearhead an exploration into the commercial and technical viability of a district energy system.

“Turning wasted industrial heat into useful energy here in our City of Hamilton will decrease our building’s carbon footprint by about 70 percent,” Tassi added.

This innovative system is designed to harness locally available industrial residual heat as a sustainable fuel source for a proposed low-carbon thermal corridor.

If successful, the project could generate an astonishing amount of heat, equivalent to the needs of almost 1,390 football fields.

Additionally, this initiative holds the potential to reduce Hamilton’s building carbon footprint by roughly 70 per cent.

In tandem, the City of Hamilton is set to get an additional $160,000, directed toward the development of a home retrofit financing program.

That aims to incentivize homeowners to adopt energy-efficient practices, like fuel switching, air sealing, insulation improvements, and the adoption of power-saving appliances.

“By investing now in energy-efficient solutions like district heating and retrofits, we are taking the steps needed to create good-paying jobs, save consumers money and fight climate change for years to come,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources
