Hamilton police investigating street disturbance over death of dog in Westdale

Hamilton police are investigating a break and enter as well as an assault with a weapon after a street protest over the death of a dog in Westdale became unruly.

On Wednesday (June 19), police were called to a “street disturbance” in the area of Bond Street North and Norwood Road where a large crowd was gathered around a car trying to pull a woman out.

The woman was allegedly assaulted and had her phone stolen before police arrived and escorted her to safety. It was discovered that the woman’s residence had been broken into and her dog stolen.

“The group had gathered to protest the death of a dog in the individual’s care,” said Hamilton police.

Police discovered that the dog’s death and reports of animal abuse are under investigation by the provincial Animal Welfare Service.

“Our goal is to keep the peace and maintain a safe environment for everyone,” said Hamilton police, who pointed out they respect the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. “As a reminder, there is a distinction between activism and criminality. We encourage peaceful protest and individuals found breaking the law will be charged accordingly.”

As well as the the assault with a weapon and break and enter accusations, police are also investigating the theft of the dog.

A Hamilton Police Forensics Unit was onsite to process evidence in the break and enter.
