A special weather statement has been issued for Hamilton and the Niagara Region on Friday (Dec. 10) ahead of a weather system expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds.

According to Environment Canada, a strong cold front will make its way through southern Ontario bringing rain and strong winds starting Friday night into Saturday night.

Hamilton and Niagara could see as much as 25 to 45 mm of rain and winds gusting between 90 and 110 km/h.

“Temperatures are expected to rapidly fall Saturday night allowing for light snow to develop in the wake of the cold front,” the weather agency warns.

“Wind warnings are likely as this event draws closer.”

Local power outages are possible, as are flash floods due to heavy downpours and water pooling on roads, localized flooding in low-lying areas and washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts are also possible hazards.
