Hamilton lifting ban on open-air burning

The Hamilton Fire Department will end the ban on open-air burning starting 8 a.m. tomorrow (June 13) because the air quality in the city has improved.
All property owners who hold a valid open-air burn permit are allowed to resume open air burning, following the guidelines provided with the permit, the fire department said.
“We would like to thank the residents of Hamilton for their co-operation during the burn ban,” the fire department said in a press release today.
In Hamilton, the Air Quality Health Index is rated three, considered “low risk” as of noon today (June 12).
Properties within the City’s rural areas are allowed to apply for burn permits, not those in urban areas.
For more information on open-air burning, contact the Fire Prevention Division at 905 546-2424 ext. 1380, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The ban was issued on June 7 because of poor air quality stemming from the wildfires in Ontario and Quebec as well as concerns about “an elevated risk of wildland and grass fires.”
The ban included the burning of clean wood and brush, outdoor campfires and all outdoor wood burning appliances.
People don’t need a permit in rural and urban areas to use an outdoor propane or natural gas fire pit. They can also cook food on a grill or a barbecue as long as it’s a “small, confined fire that is supervised at all times,” according to the City.
