Hamilton hoop squad drops exhibition basketball game to NCAA Div. II Saginaw Valley State

The McMaster Marauders men’s basketball team had a pretty eventful December, kicking off the month with an historic win over 17-time national champion Carleton, the first time McMaster had beaten the Ottawa powerhouse in 22 years.

The Hamilton squad, now 6-4 on the season, were brought back to earth a bit to close out the year, losing an exhibition game December 29 against NCAA Division II team Saginaw Valley State, 91-66 at the University Centre in Saginaw, Michigan.

The Cardinals (8-3) were led by Tre Garrett (27 points) and Freddie McIntosh (22), as Saginaw Valley led by seven at the half and extended their lead in the final two periods to win by 16.

Tyrelle Miller led McMaster with 20 points. AY Osunde added 13 while Nathan Charles chipped in 11 rebounds.

Saginaw Valley forced 19 turnovers and scored 23 points off takeaways, shooting 48.7 per cent from the floor. The Cardinals are 7-0 this season when shooting over 46 per cent as a team.

McMaster will resume their OUAA schedule Saturday with a home date with York Lions (5-5) at the Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton.
