Hamilton and Halton area drivers and cyclists who rely on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge will be re-routing during the first months of 2023.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has announced upcoming closures for construction work on the bridge. The work is expected to take until March 20 to complete.

Pedestrian and cyclist pathways will be closed starting next Wednesday morning (Dec. 28, 8 a.m.). In another eight days after that, the roadway will close (Thursday, Jan. 5, 12 a.m.). Signage will be in place to direct traffic to alternative routes.

The 116-metres-long vertical lift bridge is located to the north of the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway. It turned 60 years old in 2022 and is the sixth bridge to span the Burlington Canal since 1830.

The bridge allows vessels to enter and exit Hamilton Harbour into Lake Ontario. It carries Eastport Drive across the canal with two lanes for traffic in each direction, as well as a single pedestrian walkway on the west side.
