Hamilton Council appoints new integrity commissioner

Hamilton is set to get a new integrity commissioner and lobbyist registrar beginning Nov. 1.

The City of Hamilton’s audit, finance and administrative committee recently hired Toronto-based law firm Boghosian+Allen LLP as the city’s integrity commissioner for the next four years.

The selection of the commissioner, made on Oct. 11, followed an open and competitive procurement process that took place earlier this year.

The role of the integrity commissioner is to oversee the ethical standards of members of council and local boards, as outlined in the Council Code of Conduct.

“Ensuring that City Hall is transparent and accountable around the decisions and actions of city council and its members continues to be a top priority for me and this term of council,” said Mayor Andrea Horwath.

“Access to an independent integrity commissioner and robust lobbyist registry means Hamiltonians and their municipal representatives have important tools to ensure that city  council and its members are performing their duties responsibly and with the utmost ethical standards,” Horwath added.

The integrity commissioner will provide advice and education, and investigate complaints on violations of conduct.

The public, as well as members of council, can file complaints with the integrity commissioner for potential violations of the Council Code of Conduct and the Code of Conduct for Local Boards.
