Ghost bike memorial planned in Hamilton to honour cyclist killed in downtown crash

Cyclists in Hamilton are planning a ghost ride to honour the male cyclist who died in a collision on Sept. 28.

A social media post from ‘Cycle Therapy Ham’ stated that they wanted to pay tribute to a cyclist whose life was tragically cut short.

The male cyclist was travelling eastbound on York Blvd approaching James St N when he was struck by a cement truck around 4 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 28), Hamilton Police said in a press release.

Set to take place on Oct. 6, the Ghost Bike Memorial ride will assemble at the West Harbour GO Station, situated in the plaza off of James St. N., at 6:00 p.m.

The ride will depart at 6:30 p.m., embarking on a short journey to the crash site, which is expected to take approximately 10 minutes.

Participants are encouraged to bring flowers or other decorations to contribute to the Ghost Bike Memorial, which will be erected at the site of the tragic incident.

The installation ceremony will be a brief yet meaningful tribute to honour the cyclist and raise awareness about the importance of road safety, according to the organizers.

Traditionally these memorials consist of bikes painted white and placed at locations where cyclists have lost their lives in accidents, serve as sombre reminders of the risks cyclists face and advocate for safer road conditions for all.
