A restaurant in downtown Hamilton is shutting its doors for good.
Afrolicious, located at 46 James St. N., is being evicted from its current space after failed rent payments in excess of $63,700.
Reddit user operationmarigold shared an image of the closure to the Hamilton community subreddit after noticing the termination warrant posted on the restaurant’s door.
Several commenters on the post were saddened but not surprised, saying that while the food was good, the restaurant often seemed comparatively empty for its large space.
“Sad they’re closing but to be honest I live in the neighbourhood and they were always empty,” said Reddit user NotVeryGoodAtStuff. User maricc said the restaurant could have done with a “much much smaller location.”
Opening in 2021, the restaurant aimed to provide “Afro-Canadian street food in a classy African styled restaurant setup” and also offered catering.
Afrolicious faced tough competition from other African and Afro-Caribbean restaurants in the area including Taste of Lagos, a Nigerian restaurant just a few doors down.
