Disruptive man wants a cigarette on flight and is arrested at airport in Hamilton, Ontario

Police made an arrest at Hamilton airport after a man was allegedly making threats, wanting to smoke a cigarette on a flight.

The “uncommon incident” happened yesterday (Feb. 15) on an international flight heading to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, Hamilton Police said in a press release.

A man threatened flight staff, creating a disruptive and unsafe environment for staff and passengers on the flight, police said.

The disturbance, stemming from alcohol-related issues and a desire for a cigarette in flight, prompted multiple passengers to intervene and assist the on-flight staff, police added.

Despite the unsettling circumstances, all passengers remained safe, and no one on the flight required medical treatment, police said.

Shortly after 3 p.m., after the arrival of the flight, officers gathered evidence and statements from those reporting the incident, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the situation, police said.

A 54-year-old Hamilton man faces charges of common nuisance – endanger life, cause disturbance, and assault in aircraft in flight, police said.

He will appear in court for a bail hearing this morning.

The collaborative efforts of airline staff, passengers, and Hamilton Police were instrumental in bringing this incident to a swift and safe conclusion, police added.
