Cop and man injured after shots fired in Hamilton apartment building; SIU investigating

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into a police-involved shooting in Hamilton that left a man and police officer injured on Saturday evening.
The SIU, a civilian agency that investigates incidents in which members of the public are seriously hurt or killed during interactions with police, said in a news release issued Sunday morning that a resident of an apartment building at 1964 Main St. W., contacted police shortly before 5 p.m. to report a man acting in a threatening manner.
Hamilton Police Service officers responded to the fifth floor of the building, where they encountered the man.
During the interaction, an exchange of gunfire took place, leaving both the man and an officer with gunshot wounds. Both people were transported to the hospital for treatment. Updates on their conditions have not been disclosed.
The SIU has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to examine the circumstances of the incident.
