Century home in Hamilton linked to the Bethune family to be preserved as part of townhome project

Townhouses will be part of a proposed development for 164-176 Rymal Rd. E. in Hamilton

A century home linked to the Bethune family will be retained and “adaptively reused” as part of a multi-home project proposed for the south Hamilton property.

The proposal for two- and three-storey dwellings on the nearly two-acre lot at 164 Rymal Road, part of a condo-townhouse development that stretches from 164 to 176 Rymal Road, will include 11 two bedroom units and 36 three bedroom units, with the details on how the project will incorporate the 3,500 sq. ft heritage home – it has as many fireplaces (5) as bedrooms – into the scheme still to be determined.

The development, owned by 2826749 Ontario Inc. and Andrew Barber and Saddique Khan, is located on the south side of Rymal Road East, west of Upper Wellington Street and east of Springside Drive in Hamilton’s Allison neighbourhood.

The lands, purchased by Dr. William Bethune, was where long-time Hamilton alderman and home builder Jim Bethune (1929-2013) grew up. The home at 164 Rymal Road was awarded its Heritage status as an example of the ‘Edwardian Classicism’ style.

Approximately 69 parking spaces are projected for the development though staff anticipate “minor modifications” to the parking layout will occur through the site plan process.

The proposal will be before the Planning Committee Monday afternoon.
