A 16-year-old is facing several driving-related charges in connection with a violent crash that left two people with serious injuries in Hamilton last month.
Hamilton Police say the crash happened on June 22 at the intersection of Rymal Road East and Fletcher Road, when a Mazda travelling westbound attempted to turn south and was struck by a Ford F-150 moving at high speed through the intersection.
The pickup truck was being driven by a 16-year-old boy from Hamilton who was allegedly travelling at 135 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, investigators say.
The impact of the crash caused two unbelted occupants of the Mazda to be ejected from the vehicle. Both sustained life-altering injuries, with one person still in hospital in stable condition. The teenage driver of the pickup also suffered unknown injuries and was taken to a hospital.
On July 17, police arrested the teen driver of the F-150. He was released on an undertaking and his identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The 16-year-old faces several criminal charges, including two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, stunt driving and speeding.
Police also laid charges against the 17-year-old Mazda driver from Hamilton for failing to properly wear a seatbelt, driving while under suspension, and violating G1 licence conditions by operating the vehicle without a qualified accompanying driver.
The 31-year-old registered owner of the Mazda, also from Hamilton, was charged with permitting a novice driver to contravene licence conditions, making a false statement and allowing the vehicle to be operated without insurance.
Hamilton Police continue to investigate and are appealing to the public for information. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-546-4753.
