City officials have granted a massive grain elevator in the Hamilton area heritage status.
In a public notice, the City of Hamilton has designated the 2 Dartnall Road grain elevator with a statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The structure was constructed in 1943 and is a preserved example of what concrete three–silo grain elevators of that era looked like.
Additional information provided by the city indicated that the building had major ties to local entrepreneurs, agricultural contributions to the WWII war effort and a rich history of trade on the Hamilton and Port Dover railway line.
Further correspondence from city officials also stated that the grain elevator is visually, historically and physically linked to its surroundings within the Hamilton area.
Additional information surrounding the historical significance of the grain elevator at 2 Dartnall Road indicates that it is located on a deep setback from the roadway on the western side of Dartnall Road, on a stretch of the Chippewa Rail Trail running between Stone Church Road East and Rymal Road East.
This makes the historical site incredibly easy to spot for passing motorists.
The City of Hamilton designated the site in mid-August and sent out correspondence today (Sept 5).
Those looking for this new historic site can find it in the neighborhood of Hannon North in Hamilton.
