The Hamiton Police Service identified the victim in the afternoon shooting outside a Tim Hortons.

19-year-old Sabir Hassen Omer from Hamilton was killed Tuesday (Sept. 14) at around 2:45 p.m. when he and another individual were approached by the lone suspect in a parking lot at King St. West and Caroline.

Police say Omer and the other victim were socializing in the parking lot when they were approached by the male suspect. After a “short, verbal altercation,” the suspect opened fire on both Omer and the other victim.

One victim escaped without suffering injuries. Omer was shot and pronounced dead upon the arrival of paramedics.

Police believe this was a targeted attack and marks the 13th homicide of 2021 in Hamilton.

“This is unacceptable in the community,” said Det. Sgt. Jim Callander. “One shooting is too many. But this happened in broad daylight in a busy area and on a busy street.”

“We need people to come forward and speak with us,” he added.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-7 male. He has a medium build and was dressed in dark clothing and dark shoes.

Police say the suspect fled southbound on Caroline towards Main St.

The public is being asked by police to check any surveillance cameras in the surrounding area between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
